Device Tree is well established in the Linux kernel. But since there could be other bootloader(s) and firmware components involved that needs to configure the hardware and thereby also needs to update the Device Tree blobs before passing it to Linux kernel. Therefore we are looking for a well established way for firmware to also make use and modify the Device Tree blobs before handing them over to Linux kernel. With this BoF session we would like to get started a gather ideas etc.

The Linaro Enterprise Group has been driving the work to implement, upstream and maintain UEFI and ACPI support on ARM platforms since its creation in 2012. Over the years, the team has initiated new activities, namely the OpenPlatformPkg proposal to support multiple SoCs and multiple platforms in EDK2, as well as supporting more and more features on ACPI, e.g. recently, Console Selection, APEI, PCIe, NUMA and new GIC implementations. In order to successfully deploy ARM servers in production, it is required that firmware (BIOS) engineers and kernel engineers work in close collaboration and drive the addition of new platforms, improved SoC support, etc. Recently Linaro founded devicetree.org to support making device tree a properly managed and supported standard. This includes reducing fragmentation, improving maintainability and increasing multiplatform support in hardware description thanks to an open process that encourages wide community participation and the current best practices and technology. The purpose of this conference is to bring the key developers and maintainers from all camps in the same place, review the status and plan the next steps. The concept of Enterprise Firmware is a fairly new one for ARM, and pretty much started in LEG, while ARM Ltd. was still focusing on mobile platforms. Also, in parallel, several partners did their own work internally without sharing, resulting in multiple implementations of what should be a standard platform. To make our partners successful, we need to help them - by leading through example - to get more done. This talk covers both the commercial importance of aligning the ecosystem and some of the technical challenges to overcome, and what ARM and Linaro are planning to do about it.
