While Volkswagen was the first automaker to contribute to the Linux kernel driving the idea of Open Source in a big company can be challenging. The talk will give an insight into Linux based CAN bus technologies, advantages of Open Source for automakers and how to enable software developers to contribute to Open Source projects.

Oliver has started with Linux 0.95 in 1992 and developed the Linux CAN subsystem (aka SocketCAN) together with a colleague at Volkswagen Group research. Since the CAN network layer code hit the kernel 2.6.25 in 2008 he accompanied and maintained the CAN development for the kernel and related user space tools. Since 2017 Oliver works on Open Source strategies and processes to generally enable Open Source contributions at Volkswagen.
